The FirstBase Hardware Management System (HMS) maintains information about a set of computers, PC's, workstations, and peripherals, along with all software packages that are installed and licensed on each machine. Additionally, Hardware and Software can be signed out to registered Users. HMS consists of three databases that work in tandem: User, Hardware and Software. The User database contains the name of the registered users. Other fields can also be stored here such as phone numbers, mailing addresses, etc. The Hardware database stores fields like Machine Type, Model and Serial Number. The Software database stores two kinds of records: developed software and purchased software. Developed software has a Software Developer field and Purchased Software stores items like Manufacturer's Serial Number and Purchase Order Number. Both store a CPU Inventory Number Where Loaded, meaning the number of the computer where this particular Software is installed. All of the data is stored in standard FirstBase database files. The front end HTML menus are fixed; other HTML forms are generated automatically, often using database information. For example, here is a piece of code that serves an Add User form, and here is the code that processes the Add User form after it is submitted. Note that we can verify the format of the Last Name field, and store the connecting IP address and current time/date stamp. As a more complex example, here is code that serves a Modify Hardware Record form, along with the code that processes this form when submitted. The FirstBase macro language can use a database to populate an HTML selection button, process and display a few lines from large text fields, verify fields and lock records, and much, much more.
